Buzz LightYear To The Rescue!

So instead of giving a family friends son a gift for his birthday,
I decided to make him a cake.

He's a big fan of Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story .
So I made buzz landing on the moon.

For the moon I used a wilton ball cake pan.
I needed about 1 1/2 boxes of Pillsbury FunFetti Cake Mix.
I don't think you can see it in the picture, but I made moon craters with a medium size round gum paste cutter.

I covered it with butter cream.
I also added a little bit of Wilton black icing coloring.

Stars are made out of fondant that I added Wilton yellow icing coloring.
I then attached the stars to wooded sticks with more fondant.

And the famous Buzz Lightyear I bought at target in the toy section.

Here's the butter cream recipe I used from wilton.com:

                                                     1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine softened
1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract.
4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar (approximately 1 lb.)
                                                             2 tablespoons of milk

In large bowl, cream shortening and butter with electric mixer. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Keep bowl covered with a damp cloth until ready to use.

For best results, keep icing bowl in refrigerator when not in use. Refrigerated in an airtight container, this icing can be stored 2 weeks. Rewhip before using.

If icing is to thick add 2 tablespoons of milk.

Cakes From The Past:

Hello Bloggers
Today I'm planning on just posting pictures of cakes I have done in the past.

My Very First Tier Cake:

Top tier is red velvet with cream cheese frosting.
Bottom tier is chocolate cake also with cream cheese

I used no support to stack the cakes.
Thats why the stacking is off and doesnt look so great.
I have learned from now on to ALWAYS use support!

Boyfriends Soccer Jersey Cake: Early September 2010

My Boyfriend is a die hard Sporting fan (Sporting is a Portuguese pro soccer team).
I made him a personalized soccer jersey with his last name and his favorite number.
Oh and by the way Sporting is my rival team. Im a die hard Benfica fan.
It was very hard not to add some Benfica gear to this cake =]
This is by far the funnest cake I ever made.

Devils food  w/ fresh cut strawberries w/ thin layer of ganache and chocolate mousse frosting

Covered w/ fondant.Hand painted stripes

All Finished w/ piped grass, fondant letters and soccer ball.

My 2nd Tier Cake:Febuary 2011

It was her son's 3rd birthday

Marble Cake w/ Chocolate btter cream.

First Fondant Cake: Father's Day 2010 Polo Cake

My father is your typical portuguese man.
He wears polos all the time.
So instead of making a shirt and tie cake,
I decided to make polo.

I made this on Father's Day 2010
It was my very first fondant cake.
Not bad for my 1st time.

I used Wiltion fondant.
Which I'm not a big fan of.
The colllar  is also fondant and so is the pocket.
I piped the buttons with  red piping gel.

The hardest part of this cake would have to be the collar.
It took me a  few times to get it somewhat looking like a collar.

Fullfiling A Dream:

I'm a 20 year old with a dream of becoming a baker.
With economy being where it's at right now, I can't afford schooling to fullfil my dream.
So I decided I'm going to teach myself until the time is right for schooling.

Well all know the phrase "Pracitce Makes Perfect"
Well I'm hoping that with alot of practice and patience I will be atleast close to perfect.
I know it's not going to be easy but I am up for the challenge.

Everything I blog about will most likey be the first time I try it.
Hoping everything comes out perfect will be a challenge for me because I'm such a perfectionist when it comes to decorating cakes or  other sweet treats

Making this blog will help me keep track of my progress.
And if anyone else that comes across this blog that is also in my shoes , I hope it will help and inspire them to fullfil their dream of becoming a baker.

Happy Baking
